History on the Avenue

First Outdoor Historical Photo Exhibit in Caldwell

April 25- May 10

The history of Caldwell’s business district comes to Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell in a fascinating outdoor historical photo exhibit from Sat, April 25- Sun, May 10. The public is invited to stroll the Avenue and view over 60 photos of how downtown Caldwell looked over the last 125 years. Enlarged photos will be on display in store windows with accompanying descriptions. A self-guided tour brochure will be available at shops along the Avenue beginning April 25.

The historical photos from the 1890s through 2000 show the evolution of the Caldwell business district along Bloomfield Avenue. The Avenue known historically as “the Big Road” came into existence in the early years of the 19th century.  Included in the exhibit are photos of large, beautiful homes and hotels that reflect an era when Caldwell was known as “the Denver of the East” for its clean country air. Likewise are photos after the big fire of 1897, of Memorial Day parades in the early years of the 20th century, of the Trolley that ran east to Newark until 1952 and many more.

Sponsored by the Caldwell Merchants Association, the Association is thankful to many in the community for use of the photos and research help including John Collins, Richard Gibbs, Ryan Dorchak, Bunny Jenkins, Mary Ann Straub, Sam Kent, Tom Gartland, David Cowell, Beverly W. Crifasi, Janet and Bob Markman and the Historical Society of West Caldwell.

Art on the Avenue 2015

Art on the Avenue is a widely supported community event where strollers along both sides of Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell can view and purchase fine art, photography, sculpture and (juried) fine art crafts.  Entries in the categories of fine art, photography and sculpture are eligible for cash prizes.

Winners are chosen by professional judges. Last year fifty-eight artists participated and over $1100 in prizes were awarded.  While many participants are well known in their fields, Art on the Avenue is open to new artists as well.   There is also a children's art contest, open to all children through high school age in schools in the surrounding West Essex towns.

Fencing is provided for the convenience of artists to hang their work, and several en plein air artists will be painting along the Avenue. Participating restaurants and shops offer specials that day and music adds to the festive atmosphere.
